Two months into the school year, Courtney Johnson, SPARK’s Community Engagement Coordinator, updated the SPARK Council on her work with young people in our community.

She’s currently working directly with students at Northern Lights Community School (NLCS), the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) in Grand Rapids, Bigfork High School, and Hill City High School.  At NLCS and the ALC the program goals include:

  • To equip young people with basic understanding of Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • Provide an opportunity to practice these skills in a safe setting
  • Assist youth in creating connection to community
  • Expose youth to positive adults in the community

You can read her full report here.

She concludes:

Schools and communities are motivated and interested in working creatively to provide opportunities for students to learn and practice Social Emotional Learning skills along with building a greater sense of community. When presented the intentional programming around building positive relationships with adults and creating a connection to community the response has been overwhelmingly supportive and positive.
